The Species Bait
Nearly every animal walking into a "pet friendly" hotel is a dog. The industry knows this and still will not write the word, because "pet" commits to nothing: not your species, not your breed, not your size.
A word that promises everyone
"Pet" says every animal is welcome. In practice it means dogs, and often only some dogs. The breadth is not generosity, it is cover: a word that promises everyone can be narrowed to almost anyone at the desk, because it never committed to a species in the first place.
Cat owners find out by phone
Cat owners have run into this so often they have stopped believing the word. The recurring account is a callback after booking to explain that "pet friendly" meant dogs all along. A phrase that has to be corrected by telephone every time it is used is not a policy. It is bait, and the people it excludes learned that years ago.
The refusal to write "dog"
Here is the part that touches you even though you have a dog. If a hotel serves dogs, it could write "dog friendly" and name what it takes. It writes "pet" instead, and the vagueness is the point: refusing to name the species is how it keeps the right to decide, at the desk, which dogs it actually meant. The hedge that excludes cats is the same hedge that lets a hotel turn away your breed.
Specificity is honesty
An honest property names what it serves. "Dogs welcome, up to this size, in these spaces" tells you exactly where you stand and cannot be walked back on arrival. "Pet friendly" tells you nothing and keeps every option open, all of them the hotel's. The specific word is the trustworthy one, precisely because it gave something up to say it.
Make them name the animal
Before booking, make the property say the word: does this mean dogs, does it mean my dog, in writing. If the answer needs a phone call to extract, you have already learned what the label was hiding. A hotel that means dogs can simply say dogs, and the ones that will not are telling you something.
